This is one of my favorite songs. It has a catchy tune and is very upbeat. When I sing it, I love to really try and put some passion and soul into it. It is just a really fun song to sing and to listen to, not to mention the awesome message in the song. Man, at times it will give you the Holy Ghost Bumps! Sounds great, right?? Sure it does! But I have begun to wonder if I have ever truly thought about the words of this song.
The first verse asks “Are you past the point of weary? Are your burdens weighing heavy? Is it all too much to carry? Let me tell you about my Jesus.” Wow. We can all relate to that right? We’ve all been weary. We have all had burdens we didn’t think we could carry. But what about that last part? The telling about my Jesus part. Can we relate to that as well??
I will be the first to admit I fail often at this. As we prepared to sing this song this past Sunday, I began to think about how often (or not) that I tell someone about my Jesus. Sure, we all “witness” in the conventional way of preaching about Jesus, singing about Jesus and even teaching others about Jesus. But what about on that deep down personal level? The kind of personal that says, “Hey, I know life isn’t great at this moment but let me tell you how my Jesus can help you.”
We are quick to throw out an “I’ll pray for you” as we go about our day. (GUILTY!) Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great thing to pray for others. We should always pray for our friends, families, coworkers or anyone who may need that special touch from God. But what if the someone who poured out their worries, their concerns or their struggles to you doesn’t know our Jesus. Saying I’ll pray for you doesn’t mean much to them. So what do we do?
We tell them about our Jesus. We tell them how He can turn a life around. We tell them how He can bring joy in the midst of heartache. We tell them how He died on the cross so that we could have that joy that comes with knowing Him. And then we pray for them and with them.
We are living in the midst of hurting people, struggling people. People looking for anything they can to produce happiness. We need to tell them about our Jesus, praying that they will one day turn to someone in need and say, “Let me tell you about MY Jesus.”
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” 1 Corinthians 1:18
