Marie walks in and sits down at her desk. In her mind, she is rolling her eyes at another day she has to spend in the office. She thinks to herself, “why can’t I have enough to stay home and not have to be here?”. It’s not even nine o’clock and she is already complaining to her coworkers about phone calls, emails and anything or anyone else that is getting on her nerves that morning.
Sarah listens from her desk across the room. She has struggled with her faith lately, struggled with life. Marie has been counseling her and praying with her. But at this moment, Sarah wonders if it’s doing any good. Watching Marie, Sarah wonders how she can be helped if the person helping her is so unhappy in her life.
As I ponder the situation in this story, I realize I have been the “Marie” many times. I proclaim my faith, I tell others about Jesus and the joy He brings me. Yet, I complain about the blessings He gives.
What?!?! How can you complain about blessings? It’s a lot easier than you think.
I have complained about going to work. But God blessed me with that job so that I can pay my bills and feed my family.
I have complained about my gray hairs. But that only means God has blessed me with another day, another year with my family.
I complain about the house I live in. It’s not mine and it’s old and small. But I fail to remember that God has blessed me with a roof over my head when there are some sleeping on the streets.
Shall I go on??? I know we have ALL been there my friends.
Philippians 1:27 tells us “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ….”
And Philippians 2:14 says “Do all things without complaining and disputing…”
My friends, Jesus is telling us to act according to our calling. If we say we have peace and contentment and joy in Him, the let us live like it! Let us walk as we talk!
I know sometimes it’s hard. Believe me, I struggle oftentimes. But remember, others are watching. And sometimes, we may be the only bible they read or hear. So make sure the truth is what they see and hear.
Until next time…
Philippians 4:11 “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”
